![]() ![]() ![]() What does not feel padded out, surprisingly, is multiplayer. Part of that is simply familiarity with the franchise and the other part-however unfair-is the prequel nature of the game removing any uncertainty from the proceedings about where this is all headed. But it never reaches the same heights of mind blowing “epic” that previous games achieved. It’s not that Ascension is a bad game, far from it, in fact. And while all this sounds good on paper, it never quite gels together as a cohesive whole. This time around, the distribution is more even, with many more puzzles cropping up, and quite a lot of clambering about for Kratos to do in between fights. The ratio of these elements has changed somewhat over the years, with God of War III definitely erring far more on combat than either traversal or puzzles. The series has always juggled a trio of gaming mechanics in the form of melee combat, some platforming/traversal, and puzzle solving. In some ways, the most surprising thing about God of War: Ascension is how much it feels like the original God of War. Some of the flashbacks call for a human side to Kratos that requires him to speak at normal volume and it’s a nice change to see Kratos acting in a fatherly manner and actually reinforcing that he had something worth losing. Carson returns to voice Kratos, he actually gets to exercise his acting chops a little bit more in this instalment, doing far more than just shouting, “ATHENA! ZEUS! AERIES! YOU WILL PAY,” all the time. The music is still an evocative mix of hysterical orchestra with wailing chorus and more subdued tracks with classic Greek instrumentation, though ignorant players might erroneously think they are “ripping off Battlestar Galactica.” One unexpected surprise is the voice acting. As to be expected from a GOW game, this is a sub-woofer friendly title that will shake walls when the volume is cranked up as titanic monsters roar and buildings crumble. That is to say, the usual high standards have been achieved with few surprises. It also features a redesigned combat system, new gameplay mechanics, and downloadable content. Ascension is the only installment in the series to include multiplayer, which is online-only and features modes for both competitive and cooperative play. Four magical attacks and a power-enhancing ability can be used as alternative combat options, and the game features puzzles and platforming elements. It continues the use of quick time events and adds a new, promptless, free-form system. The gameplay is similar to previous installments, focusing on combo-based combat with the player's main weapon-the Blades of Chaos-and other weapons acquired by the new World Weapons mechanic. Helped by the oath keeper Orkos, Kratos escapes his imprisonment and confronts the Furies to be completely free of his bond to Ares. Kratos was therefore imprisoned and tortured by the three Furies, guardians of honor and enforcers of punishment. In response to this tragedy, Kratos renounced Ares, breaking his blood oath to the god. The player controls the protagonist Kratos, the former servant of the God of War Ares, who tricked Kratos into killing his wife and daughter. Loosely based on Greek mythology, the game is set in ancient Greece with vengeance as its central motif. God of War: Ascension is the seventh installment in the God of War series and prequel to the entire series. ![]() Might and Magic 3 redid everything to much better effect. MM2 turned this into a complete monty haul / monster mash fest. Might and Magic adopted the Wizardry / Bard's Tale type of combat system. Stlil magic heavy but MUCH better than BT2. Didn't feel as "good" or "Sinster" as Bard's Tale 1, but the combat system was much much better, and warriors were no longer just useless meat shields for the mages. This was a huge design blunder.īard's Tale 3 was a well done game. Monsters had no problem hitting player characters who were -10 or lower however. I believe FRFO was still in the game, but it was NOT worth having to cast it 5 times on a monster group to be able to kill them when you can just cast spells and deal with them in 2 rounds. The Dreamspell allowed you to hit anything. The problem was monsters could get LOWER than -10, all the way down to -21 (L+). 10 AC, which was L0 in this game, was still the unhittable AC. Apple II version having infinite time in the Snares of Death if you didn't move manually, due to there not being a RTC (Real time clock) available, which the Commodore 64 had.Īnd the "To hit" problem. Summoned monsters unable to use "Breath" attacks on the Commodore 64 version. ![]() This overall, was done pretty well.īard's Tale 2 was pretty much a joke of a game. Yes the game became VERY magic heavy at the end, mainly because your warriors couldn't even hit anything, but thankfully this only happened with the very last dungeon levels. 9 AC (Greater Demons, IIRC) were next to unhittable. Usually -10 (LO) monsters were unhittable by any melee attack regardless of your level. The FRFO spell (Freeze Foes) would allow you to hit monsters with a -10 armor class after a few casts. Most of the monsters were traditional monsters from traditional Dungeons and Dragons games, with some nice strange twists all over (Soul Sucker? Eye Spy? Old Man), etc. It was basically a primitive Bard's Tale.Īll of the familiar stats and condition layouts were there, just far more primitive.īard's Tale 1 was based on this format, just far more refined, and was the first full color grid based game if I recall. I doubt very many people have played the ORIGINAL copy of this game here (no one I knew even heard of its existance back when I was in high school). Now before someone says the combat system in BT1 was new or unique-it wasn't.īesides using a wizardry type format, does anyone here even remember the ORIGINAL game that the Bard's Tale 1 combat system was derived off of? One of Michael Cranford's first games? This was fun back during those days when these game types were brand new. All you did was fight and solve some riddles. These games were also basically combat simulators. The combat system was an attempt to abstract the D&D type game formula in a way that computers (of the time and of the primitive knowledge available) were able to handle well. Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was the first game. I think some people need to step back and look at the history of these games in question.īard's Tale: Tales of the Unknown was not the first. ![]() High PageSpeed Score Will Likely Not Improve Your SEO Every page on your site is important when it comes to speed and testing the homepage is useful but is a bit of a 1 dimensional approach, you should probably be looking at all pages. This is something 99.9% of webmasters running speed tests completely miss – website speed is not just your homepage. If your hosting is in Australia and your customers are in Australia but the speed test elements of PSI are performed from the US then it’s not a true to life test. This means it’s speed test is not necessarily true to real world. PSI completely ignores geography and doesn’t take into account where your visitors are located and where your hosting is. The latest version of Pagespeed Insights does take into account some speed elements but it’s still largely concerned with checking boxes. Pagespeed Insights is more concerned with measuring your site against a technical checklist that correlates with speed rather that the raw speed of the site itself. Pagespeed Insights Isn’t a Speed Test, It’s a Technical Checklist ![]() This video walks you through how to emulate a mid tier mobile device in Google Chrome to give you a better feel for how PSI is seeing your site:Ģ. Metrologists are proposing to extend metric prefixes beyond yotta and yocto. "It's supposed to be a conversation starter," says Brown, who published his proposal last month in the journal Measurement. And so, drawing from the Latin and Greek words for nine ( novem, ennea) and 10 ( decem, deka), with some poetic license to make the terms more easily pronounced, he came up with ronna, quecca, ronto, and quecto. He also wanted to continue the reverse alphabetical trend set by zetta and yotta, but needed to avoid letters such as X, W, and V that could be confused with other terms. The new prefixes should relate etymologically to nine and 10, to represent the ninth and 10th powers of 10 3. Although mathematicians sometimes use the prefix googol (10 100), a name coined a century ago by a 9-year-old girl, it, too, is unofficial.īrown prefers to follow tradition. He says unofficial terms beyond yotta, including brontobyte and geobyte, are already becoming popular. "Where there is a need that is not met, there is also a risk that unofficial units can take hold and that can cause confusion," says Richard Brown, head of metrology at the National Physical Laboratory near London, who came up with the new names. Much smaller and they run out of metrological road. At the other end of the scale, quantum physicists have measured atomic forces as small as 42 yoctonewtons. Without new prefixes, computer scientists will have no way to officially talk about what comes next. They would be the first prefixes added since 1991. ![]() If approved, the new terms could be formally introduced in 2022. They would be joined by their microscopic counterparts, ronto for 10 − 27, and quecto for 10 − 30.
